Better Stack alternative: uptime monitoring without the incident platform

Better Stack is a serious product built for teams that run a formal on-call rotation. If that is you, it is probably the right tool and this page will say so. If you are a small team, an agency, or a solo operator who wanted uptime checks and a status page and found yourself quoted per responder, you are the person this page is written for.
What Better Stack does well
Better Stack is not really competing on uptime checks. It is competing as an incident management platform that happens to include monitoring, and on that ground it is strong.
- On-call schedules, escalation policies, and incident response workflows are first class, not bolted on.
- Alerting is unmetered in a way most competitors are not: phone calls, SMS, and push notifications without buying credit packs.
- Check coverage is broad, including Playwright-based browser transaction monitoring, which genuinely reproduces a multi-step user journey rather than fetching one URL.
- A Terraform provider alongside the REST API, which matters if your infrastructure is defined in code and monitoring should be too.
- The status pages are polished and the product is clearly well designed throughout.
- The free plan covers ten monitors at three minute intervals, which is a faster free interval than most.
- It sits inside a wider observability suite, so logs and metrics can live next to your uptime data.
If you have a rota, a formal escalation policy, and someone who is paged at 4am, that combination is worth paying for and Undownable does not replace it.
Where it starts to hurt
The billing model is the usual reason people go looking. Ordinary team members are not a separate charge, which is good, but the on-call responder role is billed per seat and it is not a small number: roughly the cost of several months of Undownable Pro, per responder, per month. Add a second and third responder and the monitoring line item on your invoice stops being a rounding error.
Monitor capacity is bought in blocks on top of the base allotment, and additional status pages are priced separately again. None of that is unreasonable for a platform of that scope, but it is a lot of machinery if what you actually needed was "tell me when the site is down and show my customers a status page".

Where Undownable differs
Undownable is deliberately narrower. It does uptime monitoring, alerting, and status pages, and it does not try to be your incident command centre.

Who should stick with Better Stack
- You run a real on-call rotation with schedules, escalation policies, and acknowledgement tracking. That is their core competence and Undownable has no equivalent.
- You need phone call or SMS escalation. Undownable does not send either.
- You need browser transaction monitoring that walks through a multi-step flow such as login and checkout. Undownable checks endpoints, not journeys.
- You want monitoring defined in Terraform alongside the rest of your infrastructure.
- You already use their logs or metrics products and want one vendor and one pane of glass.
- You need sub-minute check intervals.
One genuinely good hybrid: keep Better Stack for the on-call platform, and run a couple of free Undownable checks as an independent second opinion on your most critical endpoint. Two vendors failing at once is a much rarer event than one.
Is Undownable cheaper than Better Stack?
For a small team, substantially, because Undownable Pro is one flat price per team with unlimited members and unlimited status pages. Better Stack bills on-call responders per seat and sells monitor capacity in blocks, so the gap widens with every person you add.
Does Undownable have on-call scheduling and escalation policies?
No. Alerts go to the channels you configure, with per-monitor routing so production can page a different place than staging, but there is no rota, no escalation ladder, and no acknowledgement tracking. If you need those, Better Stack is the better fit.
Does Undownable do browser or transaction checks?
Not today. It runs HTTP, keyword, JSON API assertions, TCP, ping, DNS, SSL, and heartbeat checks. If you need to script a login and a checkout as a monitored journey, Better Stack has Playwright-based checks and Undownable does not.
What about status pages?
Undownable includes one status page on Free and unlimited status pages on Pro, each able to use its own custom domain, with no per-page charge. If you run several products or several clients, that difference compounds quickly.
Can Undownable watch Better Stack, or the other way round?
Either, and it is a reasonable thing to do. Any hosted monitor can have a bad day, so pointing a small number of free checks from a second vendor at your most important endpoint is cheap insurance against a silent failure in your primary.
